Representation of Schizophrenia
How did seeing this movie inform you about the conditions with which the characters were dealing? Did it help in understanding the tendencies, symptoms and the condition itself?
While watching this movie, I definitely came to a deeper understanding of schizophrenia. Throughout the movie, the hardships, trails and problems where shown and made real. The movie was able to portray how Nash views the world and what schizophrenia does to a person and their loved ones. It amazed me how real the hallucinations feel to those, like Nash, who suffers from schizophrenia.
To what extent was the condition 'Hollywood-ized'? (ex. Exaggerated symptoms, mixed-up symptoms, extreme examples) What was the purpose of the modification?
From my knowledge of schizophrenia, I do not believe the condition was 'Hollywood-ized' very much. Some of the symptoms might have been exaggerated slightly for the purpose of making a larger emotional connection between the viewer and Nash.
How might the portrayal of the conditions and those involved impact an average person's understanding of the conditions?
I believe the portrayal of schizophrenia will allow the average person to understand what schizophrenia does. Because the movie showed the hallucinations and paranoia from Nash's point of view, it gave a great understanding to what that feels like. The movie portrayed not only the facts of schizophrenia but also the emotions that go along with it.
